friendslocked. privacy is goot! life is not commodity ♥
the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event. to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. at that precise moment, mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy. henri cartier-bresson (1908-2004).

4th-May-2009 12:57 pm - aesthetics x mathematics
i bought a puzzle book called brainmatics by ivan moscovich. well i really really like my purchase! and i even drew out one of the logic puzzles for xinyi over msn. i'm out soon to buy cheese cubes to help me solve it, because i'm that lazy! and it'll strain my brain to contemplate the three-dimensional considerations, so uhm.. CHEESE! YA!
the book opens with two pages of quotes, and maybe they're quotes you can easily scour the internet for, but they're still lovely quotes! so i simply have to re-type some of them here. (oh there's a really good foreword too but it sure is long!)

"imagination is more important than knowledge. knowledge is limited." - albert einstein

einstein on math:
"never before in my life have i troubled myself over anything so much. i have gained enormous respect for mathematics, whose more subtle parts i considered until now, in my ignorance, as pure luxury!"
einstein, in a letter to a friend, 1916

"our experience hitherto justifies us in believing that nature is the realization of the simplest conceivable mathematical ideas. i am convinced that we can discover by means of purely mathematical constructions the concepts and the laws connecting them with each other."
einstein in the herbet spencer lecture at oxford, 1933

^ when i read that, i think of brilliantly folding sunflowers and fibonacci numbers!

accompanying the photograph inlay and text of moscovich's harmonograph:
"beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics." -g.h. hardy
"i do not feel i have wisdom enough yet to love what is ugly." - stendhal

which are such inspiring quotes, if only i had come into possession of this book ten years ago! never too late maybe. anyway getting hard to blog with firefox crashing every five minutes, so, tata! CHEESE!

i'd forgotten how awful it is to travel with singaporeans.
(especially when their behavior is juxtaposed with the japanese's)

9th-Oct-2008 03:37 pm - 542: nothing in this world

A cat's sense of space is "egocentric" - they remembered where the toy was placed relative to their own fixed position in space, and not by the toy's position relative to a landmark... ...Cats form a mental map of their environment, but instead of mapping landmarks ("the church is 300 ft to the left of the shop, the shop is a mile north of the farm") a cat's mental map has the cat in the middle and everything else is relative to the cat's position.
How Intelligent Are Cats?

i know i'm posting way too many photos of rubik but omigawd he's too cute. i am officially a cat hazard too ): oh well i wonder if i keep rubik in a dark box, his eyes will remain blue because of the lack of melanin deposition? (no of course i wouldn't do that, his eyes may be damaged in the light of singapore's strong sun) according to adobe photoshop colour picker & resize rubik's eyes are now an olivine #90978d, not that i'll love him any less with different coloured irises though a chrysocolla-esque colour would be beautiful!
oh oh oh today i went to skool!!! :D
8th-Oct-2008 11:23 pm - 541: rubik act cute

my mother is a CAT HAZARD she has tripped over/stepped on the poor kitten at least 3 times, and once she dropped a bamboo pole and the loud clang made rubik so frightened it hid amongst some encyclopedias in one of the low dark teak sidetables and refused to emerge :| xinyi visited him today and we had lunch at LJS :D

i don't want rubik to grow up, i feel like i'm learning quite a bit from him regarding his boundlessly curious nature and ebullient outlook to life and play. he gets fascinated by the simplest of things like flapping tissue & feathers, it's quite so amazing if i could look at every object with such sense of wonderment!!/sensitivity as rubik does, is this where art begins?

is beautiful

(it is an amazing feeling to be taking care of something living) ours!! if we get another kitten i'll name it rubisco!! :D my mum's been really snippy about him though oh well at least she hasn't thrown him out by the scruff of his neck yet. will update with many pictures soon when kevin allows me to have the internet!! he has confiscated my modem for my general good (: (: D:
